We are the Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation because we signed a treaty with the United States of America. The Treaty of 1855 makes us a sovereign nation.

  • Signed in Washington Territory on 9 June 1855

  • 14 bands and tribes were confederated

  • One member from each band and tribe marked the treaty with his “x”

  • There is reservation land and ceded land

  • Rights are laid out

  • It was ratified four years later by President James Buchanan

  • It makes us a Federally Recognized Tribe
